VIRTUES OF THE MONTH OF MUHARRAM

MUHARRAM IS ONE OF THE 4 SACRED MONTHS.

•  Allah's month of Muharram is the 1st month of the Islamic calendar and is one of the 4 sacred months concerning which Allah says in the Quran Sura At-Tawba Ayat 36 -

إِنَّ عِدَّةَ ٱلشُّهُورِ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ ٱثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْرًا فِى كِتَٰبِ ٱللَّهِ يَوْمَ خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ مِنْهَآ أَرْبَعَةٌ حُرُمٌ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلدِّينُ ٱلْقَيِّمُ ۚ فَلَا تَظْلِمُوا۟ فِيهِنَّ أَنفُسَكُمْ ۚ وَقَٰتِلُوا۟ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ كَآفَّةً كَمَا يُقَٰتِلُونَكُمْ كَآفَّةً ۚ وَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ

"Verily, the number of months with Allah is 12 months (in a year), so was it ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; OF THEM 4 ARE SACRED. That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein, ............"

• Nabi صلى الله عليه وسلم informed the ummah, the 4 sacred months which are mentioned in the above ayah are :-

Narrated Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

“.........The year is 12 months, 4 of which are sacred.

3 of them are consecutive (months from Islamic calendar)

1⃣ Dhu’l-Qa’da, (11th month)
2⃣ Dhu’l-Hijja(12th month) and
3⃣ AL-MUHARRAM, (1st month)

and(the 4th being)
4⃣Rajab Mudar(7th month) which comes between (the month of) Jumaada and Sha’baan.

• SINNING IN THESE 4 SACRED MONTHS IS WORST THAN OTHER MONTHS.

Ali bin Abi Talhah رضي الله عنه narrated that Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه commented on the above ayah of the Quran (Sura Tawbah #36):-

Allah's statement;
(Verily, the number of months with Allah...),
is connected to,ُ
(so wrong not yourselves therein), 

"In all(12) months.Allah then chose 4 out of these months and made THEM SACRED, emphasizing their sanctity, so that sin in these (4)months is MORE GREATER and good deeds bring a greater reward.'' 

Qatadah رحمه الل(Taba'in) said:-
about Allah's statementْ;
(so wrong not yourselves therein)
(Sura Tawbah #36)

"Injustice during these (4)SACRED MONTHS IS WORSE AND GRAVER than injustice in other months. Verily, injustice is always wrong, but Allah makes things graver than others as He will.''

OBSERVING MORE NAFIL FAST DURING MUHARRAM

Narrated Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه : The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

"The best of fasting after Ramadhan is fasting ALLAH'S MONTH OF MUHARRAM"

This hadith is probably meant to encourage increasing nafil fast during Muharram, WITHOUT meaning that one should fast for the entire month.
